Stronger Together: Community Hubs for Emergency Preparedness

Natural disasters are part and parcel of living in this beautiful country, but they can strike at any time without warning. Essential services such as water, power and communication can be disrupted so we need to be prepared.

SHEAP has been developed as a collaborative community response to an emergency event that may affect the Shirley area as well as other areas in Christchurch that might need assistance.

The key purpose is to provide hubs within the community that can provide members of the community a familiar place that they can visit for support as well as report to if they wish to volunteer.

You can reduce the impact of disasters by being prepared in your own home, knowing your neighbours, and knowing where to access support in the community.

Prepared at Home? Step Up

Once you are prepared in your own home, you can think about how you may be able to assist in the community.

SHEAP also has lists of “People Power” and “Ready Resources” that could be called on depending on the type and scale of event. Whether it’s offering support at the hubs, door-knocking to assess needs, or if you have specific skills eg. building repairs or providing first aid/medical assistance, everyone can play a part. Ready  Resources could include specialised tools, generators, 4WD vehicles or kitchen facilities etc available in the community.

If you would be willing to be added to either list *, please contact zn.gr1756678060o.tsu1756678060rtyti1756678060nummo1756678060cyelr1756678060ihs@e1756678060ciffo1756678060 with the subject “SHEAP”.

* Putting your name down does not obligate you to assist in an emergency, it is simply list of people that may be called upon depending on circumstances.
